Seth Harris Childhood Cancer Foundation
The Seth Harris Childhood Cancer Foundation is a foundation dedicated to raising childhood cancer awareness. We are also here to offer support, in any capacity, for the families and children affected by childhood cancer. Our goal is to provide the support these families need when dealing with this difficult disease. Please join our mailing list to receive news, childhood cancer facts, and any info you would like to request from our foundation. Also, take some time to visit our Newly Diagnosed page for information that will prove very useful for families following a recent diagnosis. The mission of the Seth Harris Childhood Cancer Foundation is to celebrate the life of Seth Harris, to honor his memory, to raise awareness for childhood cancer, and to provide information and emotional support to those families and children affected by childhood cancer. Our purpose for this foundation is to provide support so that no child or family feels alone during this life-changing journey.

On average, 12,500 children and teens will be diagnosed with some form of cancer each year in the US. Right now, there are 7 children fighting for their lives who will not live through the day. Cancer remains the #1 killer of American children, more than cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, asthma and aids combined. While the cancer death rate has dropped more dramatically for children than for any other age group, 2,500 children and teenagers will die each year from cancer.
Over the past decade only one new cancer drug has been approved for pediatric use. The National Cancer Institute's Federal Budget is about $5 billion. Less than 3% of that goes to pediatric cancers combined.
Childhood Cancer occurs regularly, randomly, and spares no ethnic group, socioeconomic class or geograhic region. Typically, the factors that trigger cancer in children are usually not the same factors that may cause cancer in adults, such as smoking or exposure to environmental toxins. Rarely, there may be an increased risk of childhood cancer in kids who have a genetic condition, such as Downs syndrome. Those who have had chemotherapy or radiation treatment for a prior cancer episode may also have an increased risk of cancer. In almost all cases, however, childhood cancers arise from non-inherited mutations (or changes) in the genes of growing cells. Because these errors occur randomly and unpredictibly, currently there is no effective way to prevent them.
The Seth Harris Childhood Cancer Foundation was organized after Seth lost his battle to T-Cell Lymphoblastic Leukemia on May 31, 2009. Seth was diagnosed July 25, 2007 and fought a very courageous and inspirational fight. The foundation's mission is to celebrate the life of Seth Harris and to honor his memory, to raise awareness for childhood cancer and to provide informational and emotional support for families of children with cancer, so that no family feels alone during this life changing journey.
